Yay - gifts and bubble baths

My mom sent Calista a care package today with a bunch of cute summer clothes and a shape sorter. Calista loved everything and promptly tried to wear the pants. Thanks Nonni! After dinner she asked for a bubble bath so how could I resist? The photo of her in the bathtub may be my new favorite picture of her. I know I am biased but isn't she beautiful!?

New words Calista has learned:
Pooh
Yeah
Shower
Keys
Shy
C'mon (sounds like "mom" - the Irish way!)
Sheep
Baaah
Teeth
Tight
She's also added the "y" for Ducky, Mommy and Daddy

When Daddy Watches Calista...

He lets her watch baby signing DVDs (she is transfixed - she never watches TV) and eat popsicles (also a first) that Eloise made when she was visiting. It was actually so hot on Saturday that we took her to the public pool across the street from us for the "rec swim" hour. The fog has since rolled in and I couldn't be happier to have a cool SF summer day once again.

Our Preppy Baby

Little missy looked so adorable in this Ralph Lauren dress from our friends Marissa and Steve that we had to take her photo.

Pants on Head!

Calista thought it was the funniest thing to wear her pants on her head (yes, she thought up this game herself!). We thought it was pretty darn funny too.

Happy Father's Day!

On Father's Day, Scott went for a long mountain bike ride with his friend Tamir. Calista and I had a play date with Stephanie and Theo (Terry is doing an artist-in-residency at Pilchuck in WA). We walked to Farina for dinner together - it was so delicious! Calista was such a good girl. I think she liked being outside - very European. :-)

Calista says Happy Father's Day to both Grandpa Michaels, Great Grandpa Charles and all the wonderful daddies in the world.

Jeb Brady's Wedding

Scott went to MA for his cousin Jeb's wedding on June 7. I love this photo of Scott with his mom and dad during the reception.

Shoes and The Origin of Curls?

Calista is constantly trying to put shoes on. I think she associates shoes with going outside and doing fun things. Plus it must be fun to test her motor skills.

By the way -- look at those cute curls! I am wondering if they come from the Vannice side of the family (technically my dad's mom's side = the Jensen side of the family). Check out my dad with my Grammy Evelyne when he is 15 months old, my dad with my Aunt Susan, and Calista's Great Great Great Grandma Flora Martin (I hope I got that right). All have curls. Flora, by the way, was born in the Azores Islands of Portugal but died in Watsonville, CA (at the very young age of 31 of Tuberculosis -- one more reason we feel strongly about vaccinating Calista on schedule!). As some of you may know, Watsonville is the artichoke capital of the USA. Scott and I love artichokes, so I will always think of Flora when we eat them now and whenever we drive through Watsonville, which is between Santa Cruz and Monterey. And as some of you may also know, Scott and I took our first "getaway" to Monterey and he proposed to me in Half Moon Bay which is also nearby. It is fascinating to me to think about these intersections of our family history...I live literally around the corner from Grammy's middle school (Everett)...Grammy and Grandpa met at Cal and must have strolled through Sather Gates as did Scott and I when we were getting our MBAs...Nanny and Poppy owned a night club on Kearny and Post (The Ace of Spades) which is also literally around the corner from where Scott and I had dinner last night at Cafe Claude before going to ACT...and now here are Calista's curls! We're going to have to check the Brady archives next to see about their curls! :-)

Addendum to a Message from Mommy

Calista was doing the cutest stuff today I just had a write it down! We were playing "monkeys on the bed" and she would lay down and pretend to go to sleep and say "shooo" (she can't do the snoring prefix yet!). She is such a little sponge too. I raised my hands up to gesture "what?" and she did the exact same thing. I think I am going to try to teach her to sign "drink" and "eat" because it's been really helpful that she knows the signs for milk, more and all done. Also today, she almost sneezed, and still had the wherewithall to say "choo!"

Gma and Gpa Visit!

Mike and Eloise came for the last weekend of May. We all loved seeing them, and I was especially moved when Eloise said that she gets Calista withdrawls when she doesn't see her for a while! (Naturally, I can relate because sometimes I feel that way when I haven't seen her for a few hours.) Saturday happened to be my and Scott's 5-year wedding anniversary, which we spent going to the wine country for our friends Tiffany and Torsten's wedding, and spending the night in Calistoga. Mike and Eloise watched Calista, so it was the first time Scott and I had spent the night away from her together! We missed her a lot, but knew she was in superb hands, so it was the best possible scenario. They said she was a champ, and we believed them, so hopefully they will do it for us again. :-) On Sunday we all met up at our friends Sarah and Mark's house in Marin for their pool party, which Calista thoroughly enjoyed. She wore her cute new bathingsuit from Aunt Kirsten. It was quite the fun-filled weekend, and we really can't thank Gma and Gpa enough for all their help and support.

Clothes Horse

Folding clothes with Michelle = favorite activity!

Boo!

(P.S. The red stain on her shirt is from strawberries -- nothing to be alarmed about!)

Dancing Queen

Aunt Kirsten I Love You!

My sister flew out over Memorial Day Weekend and it was such a treat to see her! If only there were more public health jobs in SF...alas. We had a blast taking Calista to Tokyo Go Go for sushi dinner. She likes tamago nigiri (egg), as well as their rice and avacado. So everyone goes home happy! On Sunday, we all went to Chow again for brunch, and Kirsten and I took little missy to the Duboce Playground for more play time. On Monday, there were fun and games galore. Calista adores her aunt, so hopefully we will see Aunt Kirsten again soon! Kisses!

SF Zoo with Mommy and Daddy

Calista LOVES the prairy dog exhibit at the SF Zoo (in the Children's Zoo section) because there is a little tunnel with a perch that she can crawl up into. We had a hard time extricating her from it, but thankfully she got distracted with the other animals, like the ducks and goats! She wanted to go in that duck pond so bad, poor thing.

Go Bellview Bobcats!

My Elementary School Alma Mater in Ashland!

Funny pictures eating!

A Message from Mommy

Words that Calista can say pretty much in order of popularity (naturally sometimes the way she says a word isn’t exactly how an adult might say it…):
Hi!
Uh oh!
Mama and Dada
Bubbles
Boo!
Nana (= nursing)
Shoes
No
Go!
Choo (for Ah Choo)
Juice
Cheese
Outside
Thank You
Apple
Potato
Ball
Zoo
Clothes
Toes
Tickle
Up
Turtle
Mermaid
Grady (her boyfriend, so Michelle tells us)
Baba (she used to say this for Bottle before we got her on the sippy cup)

Animal Sounds
Woof woof
Quack quack (which she says every time she sees a pigeon!)
Awooo (for wolf)
Mooo
Ooh ooh (for monkey)
Cockadoodledoo
Ssss (snake)

It is so fun to hear Calista talk – and understand some of what she is saying! She still has quite a bit on her mind, judging from her continual chatter/babble. (Speaking of what's on her mind...this happened a while ago, but is so hysterical I have to write it down: Michelle and I took Calista to the doctor's in April to get her ears checked. She was not happy about it one bit! When the doctor was done, Calista sat very quietly in Michelle's lap, looking down like she was thinking really hard. Then she looked up at the doctor and said "bagotogoobaaagotogoobaa" or something similar with such force and feeling that the doctor literally said, "I don't want to know what that translates into!" We all knew exactly what she was trying to say!)

Now, as you may be able to guess from some of her favorite words, Calista is still obsessed with shoes and clothes. She goes into my closet to try on my shoes too – and sometimes brings them out so that I can try them on for her. I was quite impressed this evening, actually, because she seems to be recognizing that shoes come in matching pairs. If we ever need to distract her, all we need to do is open her dresser drawers and she trots right over, happy as a clam (at high tide!) to rummage around, take clothes out, try them on (yes, she can get a foot through some of her pants), and happily for us, has recently been trying to put her clothes back IN the drawers.

The last time we went to the doctor’s for her 15-month check up in May, Calista weighed 24 pounds and was 31” tall – in the 75th percentile for both. She has 12 teeth too! These days, she wakes up around 6 to 6:15 am and goes to bed between 7 to 7:30 pm. She still takes 2 naps during the day, which vary in time between 45 minutes to 2 hours. She’s a good eater, although we are trying to get her to eat more vegetables (besides peas, avocados and carrots). She’s completely weaned from the bottle (did I say that earlier in a post?) and does really well drinking milk, juice and water from her sippy cups.

Ever the active girl, she is constantly on the go, go, go. Little Miss Independence has a hard time holding hands when she walks down the sidewalk, to our constant consternation and her admonitions of “no, no, no” when we reach for her hand. She will, fortunately, hold hands when she walks down the stairs (face first and holding onto the railing of course). I’ve said before that I think she thinks she is actually a year older than she really is!

She’s still a “parallel player” but she seems to enjoy being around other kids and smiles and says “hi” to them sometimes at the playground. Sometimes she is also shy (“for like 30 seconds” as Michelle’s friend Sara said to me yesterday) and will bury her head in our shoulder or leg before she warms up.

She is also really into walking along ledges of pretty much anything. Benches are a particular joy. She has also discovered dancing and her moves are quite enthusiastic!

And Calista is definitely Daddy’s little girl. Scott is actually away at his cousin’s Jeb’s wedding this weekend, so when Michelle knocked this morning, I asked Calista who she thought it was. Without hesitating she said, “Dada!” She really misses him when he’s gone, as do I! But at least I am catching up on the blog…!
